Salsa week 6

Salsa! This was the second last week, and not a very satisfactory one. :(

The class is meant to run from 8pm to 9pm. But the previous class over-ran a little, then we had to finish up early as there was a band setting up from 9pm. We might have got about 40 minutes of class.

During that time we went over the new stuff we’d done last week, then added a few more moves – mainly variations of the dile que no involving crossed-over hand-holds. Took a wee bit time to figure it out as my partner and I were standing in a great position for the stage, but a really bad one for when the teacher came and stood in the middle of us.

I now realise we should have been organised into a circle, but it’s too late now… The other aspect of this is that at no point during the class were partners rotated. I think we were all fairly happy with the partners we had – I was – but I know from Ceroc that different partners help you find problems faster.

So my partner for the night was my friend from Ceroc – she had missed last week though, so it was a bit difficult at first, with my poor memory and her not knowing some of the moves. We got on well though, except for the times we ended up doing Ceroc moves rather than Salsa, as that’s what felt more natural for both of us. We were having a laugh anyway.

There’s one aspects of the teacher’s style which I find a bit irritating. It expresses itself in two ways. For example, last week at the end of the class she showed us some footwork we’d be doing this week to put more style into our moves. But we didn’t do them. Then in the class when she’s demonstrating a move she’s going to teach us, quite often she will show us a more complicated move, but then decide she won’t teach us it. So we get shown things, but who knows if we’ll get taught them…

Perhaps the other thing is that often she expects us to follow a routine when she doesn’t call the moves until she’s already doing them. Unless you’re watching closely, it’s too easy to miss what you’re supposed to be doing. (And when you’re not positioned well to see her, it makes it rather difficult.)

But I had fun. Hope we get a little more time next week though…
