Freestyling at JJ’s
JJ’s tonight, but I was too late for the class. This keeps happening. I blame the government. Or something.
Anyway, I had a fantastic night. Are things beginning to come together for me?
Once I finish writing it up, my post about the night in Stirling back on Sunday will again say how fantastic the dances all were (or at least 90% of them.) I will again pontificate about whether it’s the music, the dancers, or the mood…
But last Tuesday I said I had lost a lot of that feeling once I reached JJ’s. That didn’t happen so much this week. I re-found the zone, and had some tremendous dances with ladies I don’t necessarily have dances with so often (though overall, I’d guess I am probably as familiar with my average partner on a Sunday as I am on a Tuesday.) The key difference being that probably the average standard is naturally going to be lower at JJ’s than at the King Robert on Sunday, simply based on the motivation of the dancers at each venue.
So while the dancers make a difference – it’s difficult to have a storming dance with someone who can’t follow my really-a-bit-too-vague sway lead – it’s not everything.
The music then? Tonight Sheena was there and did some of the DJ’ing. So this must be a factor. Maybe… I don’t know who picked each track, but I’m sure I probably had as many great dances to Franck’s music as Sheena’s, though perhaps the overall mood of the music had an influence on me. So, maybe…
The mood? I’ve been in a rather good mood recently, but I don’t think was so different last week. The venues haven’t changed between weeks, though of course the music and the dancers do vary…
Me? Well I’ve just completed a weekend that included 8 hours of workshops and about 5-6 hours of freestyle. Maybe some of this had a bit of an influence? Could be, though I don’t detect a conscious difference. That is, I cannot pin-point anything going on in my head consciously that is new, different, changed, etc. But somewhere in my head the dance part of my brain has maybe just grown a touch…
End result – fewer moves out of a textbook, more just dancing to the music, letting the rhythm lead me and teach me.
This is good – ’nuff said.
Thanks to all the ladies I danced with, and Sheena and Franck. I had an excellent night. Hope yours was good too.

I had a lovely night Duncan. I’m really pleased to hear that you did too, thanks for our dance and I’m hoping you decide to come up to Aberdeen so I can get a few more (not working at all on Saturday night, so look out guys!)
It’s such an amazing feeling when everything clicks into place, and as for getting lost in the music - like WOW man!
