Glasgow party post-Southport… (UPDATED)

There must be a reason for the poor attendance at the party tonight…

OK, it wasn’t so bad, but compared with usual, it was maybe half to two-thirds the normal numbers. Didn’t stop me enjoying myself… eventually…

When you compare the Glasgow and Edinburgh parties there is a big difference.

Glasgow has a good venue, good dancers, good music. Edinburgh in my experience has a poor venue (lacks atmosphere), a fair number of poor dancers, and sometimes questionable music.

But Edinburgh is always packed.

Maybe it’s the geography – Edinburgh is East Coast, and nearer Dundee and other hot-spots for dancing… Maybe it’s because that (as far as I can tell) there’s more MJ-style dancing being offered in and around Edinburgh than in Glasgow. Maybe Glasgow’s non-Ceroc dancers are just less-well informed compared to Edinburgh ones…

Tonight though, I think there were three additional factors…

  • Hot sunny day – lots of people aren’t in the mood to go dancing after that.
  • Southport – some folks will just be getting over Southport last weekend.
  • Football – fans of the world cup and those accounting for them won’t turn up.

Anyway, despite a slow start it got better…

It was another two-room affair… Main room and blues room. The blues room didn’t open until 10:30. Although I had a fair number of good dances in the main room, something was missing – I just wasn’t feeling especially inspired.

Once the blues room opened though, it was a different story. Although pretty empty at first, it was the place to find the best dancers and some lovely easy-going music. I think the heat suited this kind of music more. A hot day isn’t the best for fast dances. And somehow the blues room was cooler than the main room, so even when not dancing it was a good place to be…

At around midnight I moved my stuff through to the blues room and didn’t return to the main room again…

It took me a while, but in the blues room for the last hour or so, I managed to get back a bit of the feeling of Southport. It was subtle at first, but eventually the music and dancers brought it back… Still could have danced better than I was, but it was good.

At the last normal Glasgow party (last month was the BFG) I hardly danced in the blues room at all – this time I spent most of my night there. I wonder if this is the way it’s going to be in the future…

Who knows?

Anyway, thanks to all my partners and both DJs for some excellent music. Hope you all had a good night.

(Oh, one bad thing… I think I might have left my battery-operated fan there. :( Will have to check my bag… No big deal if it’s lost – I think it only cost a couple of quid…)

UPDATE: Found my fan in my bag! :)
