Quiet Night at JJ’s

It was another fairly quiet night at JJ’s this week – I guess the football and holidays are making a mark…

Didn’t stop us having fun though!

Arrived fairly early for me – middle of the first freestyle, and even managed to get a dance before the intermediate class. Good dance it was too.

Here’s the intermediate moves…

  • Neckbreak – classic move. I prefer the right-handed neckbreak, but now I think about it, I may have only done one – maybe two – all night. Anyway, I don’t like the way your LH has to pass in front of the girl’s face while transferring hands…
  • Static catapult with blocks. Rather than do a travelling entry into the catapult, just yourself after a return for the girl. Do a couple of lead-ins to block before a normal catapult end. Catch R-R.
  • Can’t remember the name… but you do a return and catch the girl’s shoulder on the way by, letting her overturn, and bringing her RH over your head to your other shoulder, so you’re facing the same way, her slightly behind you. then you can lead her behind you and out the other way before coming back changing hands overhead to be L-R.
  • Side-to-side LH comb unwind. The name tells the story… Keep your hand on hers after the comb to hold her back while you unwind…

The theme was about controlling the girl in her turns and such, potentially frustrating her – especially if she is prone to anticipation… In the neckbreak, controlling her turn out and in… In the catapult, with the blocks… with the catch-shoulder thing, making her over-turn to a stop to lead her a different direction… And in the side-to-side, a normal exit to both the side-to-side and the comb will be expected.

OK, onto the freestyle… Despite the low numbers and many of my favourites not being there, I still didn’t manage to dance with everyone I wanted to.

I had a good night though… Dancing felt good, I felt better able to pick moves that suited the music and sometimes my musicality felt spot-on.

No major injuries – no elbows to the face, no deep scratches to my arms… That is, no major injuries to me… Can think of at least one person I thumped (lightly) in the face…

Anyway, good night… That’s the fourth day of dancing I’ve now had in a row… Planning to go to the GUU tomorrow later on too I think… Thinking I’ll be dead at this rate by the end of the week.

Cheers guys, see you all soon! (F)
