Glasgow University Blues
Just back from the GUU for the first time in at least month…
I think I’m ready to wear the hotshot badge…
Although I enjoyed myself a fair amount, there just isn’t enough dancers there that I want to dance with to make it worth the bother. There were no more than 20 women there. Of them, maybe half I would say I particularly enjoy dancing with. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy dancing with the rest – just that it’s a greater challenge to find the pleasure…
Of the 10, there’s maybe half again that I think I can dance well with. The rest are perhaps not used to, or suited to my style currently, or perhaps are just beginners.
So we’re down to about 5 or 6. And of them there was only one person there that I can say I have really great dances with.
Compare this to Jumpin’ Jacks, where there must have been at least 60 women last night – on a quiet night – and I can almost always find someone I know I’ll have a great dance with – with my “dirty half-dozen” there for the very best dances.
I’m usually pretty tired on a Wednesday, after going to JJ’s the day before. Why bother going to the GUU when I fear that there will come a night when there is no-one I really want to dance with?
So, in future I’m thinking of only going to the GUU when I have a positive confirmation from maybe three of my friends that they’ll be there. If that makes me a hotshot – well, fair enough.
I haven’t talked about the class yet. I arrived for the intermediate class. The moves were…
- Tea-pot sway sit. I really don’t like “sit” moves. The rest of it was OK.
- Accordion butterfly-type thing. Didn’t like. Never felt right.
- First move roll-through(?) OK, though was difficult to get the women in the class to follow what I was trying to lead.
- Twisty arms thing into mambo-steps. OK, and I like (and do often) the twisty arms thing, but with the mambo steps, too many girls anticipated the exit.
Over-all, four moves I didn’t like. At one point going through the routine twice I just had to give up, I had lost the will to go on… Fortunately the class ended shortly after.
Though the demo did well though.
Just two more things to talk about…
The music – the usual good supply from CJ – missed his music while I’ve been away from the GUU…
The floor – not up to the usual standard. Found it a bit sticky in parts. Only near the stage was it as fast as I’m used to. Hope it gets a good clean and polish before Saturday. (I’m really looking forward to the party this weekend. I have a feeling it’s going to be good.)
Sorry for the negativity in this post, but what’s the point of this blog if I don’t report things how I find them?
Thanks to CJ for the good tunes, and to all the women I danced with – I did enjoy every dance.
Cheers.

Well, now that I’m actually feeling totally better, I am SOOOOOO looking forward to the party and having some amazingly fantastic dances - can I book one now?

Yeah,
The floor was causing a few problems, and I hope it does get a clean soon.
( a good sand down would not go amiss either )
not been at GUU class for a while, ( probably 8 months ) so was surprised at how few folk were there.
Bar within the hall was good though..
Thanks for the kind words about demo-ing.
To quote Duncan :-
“Twisty arms thing into mambo-steps. OK, and I like (and do often) the twisty arms thing, but with the mambo steps, too many girls anticipated the exit.”
This is a move that I don’t usually have difficulty with exit anticipation.( I have plenty of difficulties with other moves though ! )
Perhaps locking your left arm a bit more in the walk would help ?
Hopefully there will be plenty of folk there this weekend to put you back in the mood for GUU.

Thanks for the comments John.
Sheena – you’ve got a permanent entry on my dance card.
