Back to WCS
Was back at my first WCS class for about a month and a half last night.
I was a bit apprehensive, thinking I’d have forgotten so much, but it was alright.
Unfortunately, and partly to do with my dodgy navigating, we arrived about quarter of an hour late, but we hadn’t missed much.
As before, we spent the first hour or so practicing “basics”, with a could of variations thrown in just to keep us interested and on our toes (so to speak.) We had a variation in footwork for the guys, a bit of syncopation for the girls (1, 2 and 3, 4, 5 and 6) which the guys could copy if they noticed it. Oh, and a basket duck under hijack (I think it was termed something different, but that’s what they call it in MJ.)
Besides the basics we had a wee sit/pose kind of thing. That was cute. We also started with a walk-around move as something different from starting with a sugar push…
Quite a few tricky things on top of the basics, which on their own can be quite tricky… I’m fairly sure I’ve said it before, but again, I am concerned at how well a complete novice would do. I’ve been trying to get my dance partner to come along and give it a go, but I fear that as she’s had basically zero experience of WCS, she would be pretty lost, pretty quickly. I don’t know, perhaps I am underestimating both her abilities and the ability of our teacher to tailor the lesson and give extra attention when it is needed.
For the second half, we worked on a few trickier moves, most of which I have forgotten just now. Just as well perhaps that I got a video of the routine so I can watch it over before next week, as the idea is that we are going to stick with these moves, perfecting them over a few weeks, then, I expect, building on more stuff on top…
During most of the class I seemed to be doing OK. One or two things I think I could have done a fair bit better with… It was only at the end when we had to put everything we had learnt in the night together into one routine did it get a bit much for me. Having to learn a whole new sequence so fast is a bit beyond my abilities, and I made many more mistakes while trying to remember what I was supposed to be doing next…
I think being on holiday, and so not having had just done a full day’s work made a big difference to me. While other people would have been mentally and physically tired even before getting there, I was fresh, having not done a great deal during the day. Wonder what that’ll mean next week when I’m back at work, and very busy.
Anyway, I enjoyed the class, and I’m beginning to get into WCS a bit more. Maybe if I ever get good at it, I might even choose to dance it in preference to MJ now and then.
If I do get good, I think I’m going to be in big demand… While there was at least a dozen girls at the class (probably more) there were only 4 or 5 guys. During the basics bit of the lesson a lot of the girls lead, but understandably they didn’t do that for the more advanced stuff later. But it looks like I’m learning a dance where there are maybe four girls to every guy…
Maybe I should keep this quiet…
